Artist • Britt McNamee
Britt McNamee has always made sure that art was a part of her life, from the disciplined study of handcrafted embroidery she did as a child in Sweden to her current interest in transparent watercolor painting. At age 15, Britt came to the U.S. as an exchange student to continue her education. Soon afterwards she became a U.S. citizen living first in the Chicago area, and then later settling in Portland. After raising a family in Portland, Britt rediscovered her love of watercolor painting.
Through her husband’s career move to Hamilton, Ohio, she became very active in the local art community supporting the art museum and taking numerous art classes. Upon her retirement, Britt and her husband moved back to Portland where she continues to hone her artistic ability. She was accepted into the Watercolor Society of Oregon in 2001.
“My art is about telling a story in shapes and colors. Most of my paintings hold a personal meaning. I usually start out with an underpainting and then develop the shapes, overlapping the images as I go. I’m not afraid to put together things that exist far apart in real life as long as it makes for an interesting composition. As an artist, I want to engage the viewer and tell a story. I hope my art accomplishes that goal.”
