 Ellen Jackson grew up on the southern tip of the island of Luzon, in the small city of Legazpi in the Philippines. A place of infinite color, surroundind by incredible natural beauty. From the black sand beaches bordering the azure gulf of Legazpi, to the perpetually smoking, and frequently active, cone shaped volcano, Mayon, she daily viewed the art of nature itself. While growing up, she often witnessed the awesome fury of Mayon in full eruption. Billowing clouds of hot gases and ejecta, glowing with inner fire, along with streaming scarlet flows of lava, snaking their way down the rugged slopes, left vivid images that she would later transfer to some of her art. The elasticity and malleability of molten lava led, in part, to her fascination with the medium of fused glass.
While in college in Manila, studying for her degree in chemistry, Ellen absorbed the knowledge of thermodynamics and physics which have, in turn, helped with the ongoing creative process in her art. Since marrying and becoming an American citizen more than two decades ago, Ellen and her husband, Hugh, have collaborated to create different and varied forms of art in the medium of glass. It is a fascinating and ongoing learning and creative process that brings her much satisfaction and pleasure. Ellen hopes that her art will inspire some of the childhood wonder and fascination she experienced while growing up in an environment of beauty and natural splendor.
